Fear Factor

joshua-1-9

No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you . . . Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. — Joshua 1:5,9

Joshua had good reason to be afraid: He had just been given the assignment to lead God’s people across the Jordan into the land promised to them. He must have been terrified at suddenly being responsible for the fate of so many people. But did you notice the factor that changed everything?

The Lord God promised to be with Joshua at all times, in all circumstances and in every place.

A recent ad campaign proclaimed “No Fear.” Wouldn’t it be fantastic to never experience even a moment of anxiety or doubt simply by buying a product, hiring a body guard or installing a security system? But we know better. Fear seems to haunt us — fear of the future, fear of a doctor’s report, fear of a failed relationship.

Just as God promised to go with Joshua, He extends that same promise to you. There is no place you can go that God is not, and nothing He will ask you to do for which He will not first prepare you. When you accept that as truth, you can worship Him with a thankful heart no matter what your situation.

What fears do you face? Name them. What personal battles do you have to fight, or what strange land are you about to enter? Like Joshua, remember God’s promise to be with you “wherever you go.” What an incredible statement! Wherever you are right now, in whatever circumstance, the Holy God of Israel is with you. Let that truth build your confidence today.

Turn your fear into faith.
