One of the issues that arises for many people in regards to thinking about evangelism is that it is something we have to do. I’ve heard people say “whether or not you have the gift of evangelism, we all have the job of evangelism”.
Now as true as that might be, helpful, it isn’t. As a motivator, guilt will drive people to do the bare minimum, and look at it as something to check off a list. However, we are called to share the good news and the focus is on the good news, not us. As is in Jesus’ nature, grace is the motivator, not guilt. We share the good news because of what it is. We have “tasted and seen that the Lord is good”. Like the Samaritan woman, we invite people to come and see someone who knows everything we have done – and still loves us!
We are all natural evangelists. We tell people about things all the time. I constantly tell people about things that have make an impression on me – books, the Cubs, a great restaurant, etc. Why should the most important thing about us and to us be any different? That said, evangelism can be very difficult.
These three resources, The Reason for God, Just Walk Across the Room, and Becoming a Contagious Christian can alleviate some of the difficulty in evangelism. These three small group studies give you and your group encouragement, practical advice and solid answers that will help you share the good news with confidence and grace.
The Reason for God by Timothy Keller
The Reason for God study are designed to help you and your group learn how to better engage those around you in conversations about faith and life. Specifically, it will help you think through six of the most common objections to Christianity. In the video, you’ll see Tim Keller meet with a group of real people sharing their beliefs and problems with Christianity. The Reason for God is a resource for what to say in response to these objections, and a model for how to say it. Watch the trailer below and the first full session here.
Just Walk Across the Room by Bill Hybels
The goal for every Christian is to reflect Christ’s love and follow his example by taking simple walks across rooms—to people living far from God. This small group study is designed to equip and inspire you to participate in the same pattern of grace-giving by taking simple walks across rooms – leaving circles of comfort and extending hands of care, compassion, and inclusiveness to people who might need a touch of God’s love today. Watch the trailer below and the first full session here.
Becoming a Contagious Christian by Lee Strobel and Mark Mittelberg
Effectively communicating our faith in Christ should be the most natural thing in the world. We just need encouragement and direction. Becoming a Contagious Christian articulates the central principles that have helped the believers at Willow Creek Community Church become a church known around the world for its outstanding outreach to unchurched people. Discover your own natural evangelism style, how to develop a contagious Christian character, to build spiritually strategic relationships, to direct conversations toward matters of faith, and to share biblical truths in everyday language.
