My son lost his first tooth while we were on vacation. He was thrilled. Since he has two big sisters, he knew what to expect. Since our family celebrates imagination in our kids, he couldn’t wait to go to sleep because the next morning there would be “fairy dust” on the ground and a surprise under his pillow.
Then all of a sudden his smile turned upside down and tears filled his eyes. He said, “Mommy, how is the tooth fairy going to find me?”
We knew precisely how the tooth fairy was going to find him, although I was wondering how I could get my hands on translucent glitter on such short notice.
My husband and I consoled my son and assured him that the tooth fairy knows the location of every child who loses a tooth. And, even though we were in a hotel room in another state, there would be something waiting for him when he woke up. My son was skeptical.
His worry and concern got me thinking. While I believe it’s a benign issue of encouraging imagination for my son to believe that the tooth fairy will find him, it is crucial for him to know there is someone beyond-our-imaginations-amazing, our Heavenly Father, who knows exactly where we are at all times and whose love follows us where ever we go.
Psalms 139:7-10 says,
Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Where can I flee from Your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, You are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, You are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there Your hand will guide me,
Your right hand will hold me fast.
The children’s book God’s Great Love for You by Rick Warren reinforces this message for little ones. It teaches them that God’s love is with them wherever they go. The accompanying illustrations allow us to follow the journey of a little girl as she travels to places far and wide to discover that God’s great love is perfect, and everywhere, and will never end.
As they get older, children may be tempted to doubt God’s love, but through repetition, this truth will settle in their heart. This book is one that can be read over and over again until your child has confidence that God’s love and care for them is secure.
The next morning my little man could hardly believe it when he found a crisp dollar bill under his pillow. He immediately started telling us how he was going to spend it.
My son doesn’t have to be afraid that he will be overlooked or unseen because the Bible assures him that he is one of God’s creations and that He loves him “with a great big unstoppable love.”
