One of the most important things we can do as parents is to give our children a strong spiritual foundation to stand upon. From the moment our children are conceived to the moment they make their miraculous entry into this world, we can begin praying for and speaking words of life over them.
And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. – Deuteronomy 6:6-7
As they grow from infants and toddlers and develop into school-aged children, tweens and teens, we can let them know just how precious they are, just as they are. Even as they mature into young adults and beyond, we can continuously affirm who they are in Christ.
We parents have the privilege of letting our children know that they have intrinsic value and immeasurable worth simply because they are created in the image of God!
So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. – Genesis 1:27
We can tell our children that God created them for a purpose and help them discover the incredible plans that God has for their lives!
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. – Jeremiah 29:11
We all know how wonderful it feels when someone complements us and tells us how great we are. Now imagine how life-transforming it would be for our children to hear, day in and day out, that the God who created them loves them and thinks they are incredibly special too! That’s why it’s so important to begin instilling God’s love for our children into their hearts from as early an age as possible. The best way to do this is by sharing God’s truths with them directly from Scripture.
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. – Romans 10:17
Following are several key Scriptures that can help us convey to our children just how special they are and how much worth they have in God’s eyes. Please join me in becoming intimately acquainted with the following Bible verses:
You alone created my inner being. You knitted me together inside my mother. I will give thanks to You because I have been so amazingly and miraculously made. Your works are miraculous, and my soul is fully aware of this. – Psalm 139:13-14
You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in Your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. – Psalm 139:16
I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. – Jeremiah 1:5
What is the price of two sparrows – one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. – Matthew 10:29-31
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. – Ephesians 2:10
God has given each of you a gift from His great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God Himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to Him forever and ever! Amen. – 1 Peter 4:10-11
You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I traveland when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, LORD. – Psalm 139:2-4
Let’s study these Scriptures, reflect on the timeless truths that they contain, and pray for opportunities to share these verses in ways our children will understand!
The world constantly bombards our children with messages that erode their sense of identity and worth. It’s up to us to help them understand that God loves them, not because of what they do or who they know, but because of their relationship with Him.
