Considering Adoption?

Holding Hands,You were always in my heart book about child adoption by mary beth chapman steven curtis chapman

Adoption is something that is very dear to our family. We have three adopted nieces and nephews and my husband and I have always felt led to adopt. Our family’s spiritual discontent is orphan-care. There are 153,000,000 orphans worldwide.

“Some of these orphans have lost one parent, some both, and some are “virtual” orphans that have been turned out onto the streets by their families, but all are vulnerable and in need of help. Without assistance, these orphans continue in the cycle of poverty, HIVE/AIDS, trafficking, prostitution and slavery that haunts developing countries.” – WorldOrphans.org

Whether you’ve ever thought about local or international adoption, the most important thing is just that: to think about it. Here are just a few reasons to consider adoption.

3 Reasons to Consider Adoption:

1. We Are God’s Children

“It’s important to realize, then, that we adopt not because we are rescuers. No, we adopt because we are the rescued.” — David Platt

This is so true! While it may seem like adoption is becoming a trend in evangelical circles, very few people I know are doing it because it has become popular — they’re adopting because they’ve been called by the Holy Spirit. It is such a good thing to help a child, but we shouldn’t adopt a child because it seems like the “in” thing. We should adopt because we are adopted by Christ.

2. We Can Be an Advocate

With over 150,000,000 orphans, we need to do something. Each of those kids deserves a loving family. So many of us are blessed with loving families already and these kids deserve the same.

3. We are Called to Live Out the Gospel

Adoption gives us a chance to live out the Gospel first-hand. We can give the world a picture of God’s love and show Christ through adoption.

We love each other because he first loved us. — 1 John 4:19

Orphan Sunday is coming November 3rd. Make a point to speak out about orphan-care in your church. Need ideas? Check out OrphanSunday.org and be a defender of the fatherless.

Teach Your Kids about Adoption

I love the book You Were Always in My Heart. Written by Christian music artist Steven Curtis Chapman and his wife, Mary Beth, this heartwarming tale is inspired by the true story of their adoption of three little girls from China and is a story of home and faith for all families who have been blessed by “a little bundle of love.”
