Something completed is better than something just begun. — Ecclesiastes 7:8 CEV
Horse showing was not available to me in my younger years. Recently, being halfway to life expectancy, I was presented with an opportunity to carriage drive my horse in competition. This was not something I had ever considered, and quite frankly, neither had my aged horse.
I invested a good year into getting ready for our first big day of showing, and despite my secret urge to toss in the reins at every discouraging moment of training, I pressed on. We took third on show day — and that was out of three entries.
Although we came in last, by the end of it all we had achieved something that not everyone is able to do: we finished well.
In everything we do, whether we choose it or not, there is a finish point. Although it’s nice to start well, what’s more important is that we end well — and that means trusting God’s wisdom all the way to the finish line. We don’t need to win or even meet our goals, but by finishing the task without giving up, we accomplish something great. In Hebrews 12:1, the apostle Paul said,
Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.
What task or calling has God set for you? Don’t give up until He says it’s complete. When we are in fellowship with God, the end of everything is better than the beginning. It’s our commission to finish well.
Lord, I want to finish well. Help me to press on and never give up. Bless my steps and my steadfast effort, amen.
