My husband and I love music. It is one of the things that connected us together in our dating years. We both have average voices, but we love to sing out loud together – yes, even in the shower! I recently purchased a Michael Buble CD for him our anniversary and we can belt out the tunes! We also love the Newsong and Natalie Grant song, When God Made You. It was sung at our wedding and it is very special to us.
While carrying our children in the womb, I would sing aloud and rub my belly to see if they would respond. I don’t know if it’s nurture or nature, but all three of our children have come to be lovers of music as well! I love hearing my son say, “Mom, can you put on the God music please?” Both of our older children have expressed the sense of hearing God’s voice through music. They’ve said things like, “Mom, listening to that music makes my heart so happy and even makes me feel like crying. I just love God so much!”
To a mom, that’s the best kind of love music. God’s love is bigger than the grandest ocean and stretches from the furthest points of the universe! Just read some of these Bible verses about music and songs of praise in Scripture, and it leaves no doubt that music is a gift from God and something He values in worship:
Psalm 95:1 – Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
James 5:13 – Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.
Psalm 105:2 – Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works!
Romans 15:9 – And in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, “Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles, and sing to your name.
Psalm 68:4 – Sing to God, sing praises to his name; lift up a song to him who rides through the deserts; his name is the Lord; exult before him!
Another thing our family loves to do together is devotions. We’re not an every-day-of-the-week devotional family, but we do find time for family devotions a few nights a week before bedtime. So when I found the devotional 100 Devotions, 100 Bible Songs combining both devotions and praise songs for kids (with 2 CDs!), I knew we had a match made in heaven for our musical family!
Our children could be fighting and full of rotten behavior and we put on this music and it seems to calm them and settle their wound-up spirits. It does the same thing to this Mama’s heart as well! We all need daily reminders of God’s love, and what better way than through music! 100 Devotions, 100 Bible Songs is a great book for family worship time, devotional times, before dinner time, morning chore time, or whenever! Kids can read, sing, and learn while they are spending time getting to know God!
There are praise, prayer and scripture incorporated and its bright illustrations will keep your children intrigued. I love hearing how our children can apply what they learn to their every day little lives! Take a peek inside the book here, and also be sure to check out the other books in the series, each of which includes two music CDs with the book: 100 Prayers God Loves to Hear, 100 Praise Songs and 100 Ways to Know God Loves Me, 100 Songs to Love Him Back.
