You have searched me, Lord, and You know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; You perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; You are familiar with all my ways… Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I go up to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in the depths, You are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea [even New York City], even there Your hand will guide me, Your right hand will hold me fast. — Psalm 139:1-3, Psalm 139:7-10
Wow. Can you imagine? God searches for us. He seeks us out and finds us. In fact, the Trinity embodied this very concept in the person of Jesus. He came on a search and rescue mission; He came to make His home with us, to be with us. What does He say of home for those who live into His mission, who confess and believe in Him? Jesus told His disciples,
Anyone who loves Me will obey My teaching. My Father will love them, and We will come to them and make Our home with them. — John 14:23
As we follow Christ and confess the truth that He is our home, He makes His home in us. He leads us into our true home, a place of union with Him. What a promise.
I could run from city to city, apartment to apartment, opportunity to opportunity looking for home. A house or apartment is a sign of provision, but the only home that will keep me is Jesus, safe in His arms. He is always there, even if just beyond my sight like the stars over the skyline. He is in my coming and going, in my lying down and my going out. He’ll make home with me, whether I am in Nashville, Manhattan, or Timbuktu. Wherever I make my bed, He’ll be there.
This is the beauty of our God. He is our home.
