Helping Our Kids Know That God Is Real

Last night in Kids’ Church we discussed the topic of being a hero. The program used the acronym H.E.R.O (helping others, evangelizing, relying on God, and obeying God). The kids shared different ways and places they can tell others about God. We came to the conclusion that anyone (age doesn’t matter) can share about the Lord anywhere. They shared about telling others about Jesus at school, on the bus, at the store, at the park, at the mall, in their homes, and so many other places.

I shared a very special verse to me with the kids. It’s found in 1 Peter 3:15:

Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it.

All believers, whether an adult or a child, must be ready always to give an answer for the reason of the hope we have within us! Only then will sharing Jesus be a natural overflow of the work God is already doing in our hearts, instead of sounding cold and rehearsed.

The world needs Jesus more than ever!

Here are 5 practical ways we can remind our kids that God is real and help them personalize their own faith!

  1. Practice Child-like Faith

The Bible says that we need to come to Him with the faith of a child. As a family, we can take turns sharing simple ways we each can trust God like a child.

Memory Verse: Matthew 18:2-4:

Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

  1. Look at Creation

How about taking a walk with our families and praising the Lord for anything we see that God created? We can look at the stars, listen to the wind, feel the warmth of the sun on our faces, look at how far the sky goes and the beautiful clouds that God paints it with, enjoy the flowers and so much more! Affirming together that God made it all will strengthen parents and children alike!

The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament[a] shows [b]His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge.

  1. Read Books About Knowing God Is There

Consider reading books like this one with your little ones: God, I know You’re There. Bestselling author Bonnie Rickner Jensen and illustrator Lucy Fleming, remind children through the beauty of words and dazzling images of how near our good God is! Through reading this book, children will discover that God never leaves their side, even if they can’t feel Him or see Him.

  1. Get to know the WORD

We must share the Good News of Jesus with our children… that Jesus was God in human flesh! We can start with sharing with our children about the life of Jesus through Scripture from the day they are born! Once they’re a little older, consider getting your child a youth Bible and highlight verses about Jesus together as a family.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

  1. Talk about God Answering Prayer Openly

How often do we just go through the motions of our day without ever even acknowledging God? We must get into a godly habit of talking about God’s goodness to our children. The Bible says to pray without stopping! If we are praying like we should throughout the day, we would have Him on our minds and hearts a lot more. We get so excited and worked up about earthly, temporal things. We share openly about our favorite hobby or sport’s team victory. Let’s make it a priority starting this year to speak about God’s goodness and how He is working in our every day lives. If our children see that our faith is real, they will be encouraged to grow their own faith with the Lord.
