You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. — Matthew 22:37
Don’t think of service as a “to do” — think of it as connecting with Jesus. ~ Lisa
Hey, friends! Welcome to week three of the Jesus Over Everything Online Bible Study with our friend, Lisa Whittle. How are you doing? Are you loving this study as I am? I’ve felt this ache through the pandemic, not just in missing hugs and missing sitting in church, and missing my people, but missing Jesus. Do you know what I mean? I feel like this study has been the reboot I’ve needed. A refresh. A deep breath in of the Holy Spirit. How about you?
Well, this week we’re talking about everybody’s least favorite (but should be our most sought after!) topic — service! Serving others is Jesus’ wheelhouse. He came to serve and not to be served. When we serve, we act like Him. We become more like Him.
All of that to say, recently my daughter and I chased a baby pig through the woods along the highway. How’s that for a segue?! First, I have to say that I’m not really a porcine kinda girl and second, I’m not really a woodsy chick, so this was more hilarious than it sounds. I woke up feeling poorly but we had an appointment to go to, so we hopped on the road anyway. Not ten minutes down the freeway, though, we saw (WHAT?) a piglet (a PIGLET!) running loose and realized that there could be a terrible accident if he ran into traffic. We felt that uncomfortable tug in the Spirit and turned around to fetch Francis P. Bacon so that: a) he wouldn’t get splatted on the highway and [mostly] b) no one got hurt slamming into my new little pink friend whom we named Frankie P. An hour later, we had missed our appointment, we were hot, sweaty, covered in brambles, mud, and rose thorn scrapes, and FPB was headed to a nearby pig farm after eating our breakfast of blueberries. I was dirty, sick, and finally over being annoyed, and went home and climbed into bed laughing, “What a glamorous life!”
It was a joke, of course, but, is that what anyone of us really want? Glamorous lives? Easy lives? Fame, fortune, prestige, and fancy things? Does that hold a candle to the adventure we get with Jesus? Not a chance!
Satan is a liar if I believe I’m above anything at all. I’m not. Anything God wants me to do, calls me to do, points His girl to do, I’m doing. Right? No matter how crazy. No matter how inconvenient. No matter how muddy and brambly. I’m in. Are you in? Let’s do this!
Service, at its root, is all about love, specifically our love for Jesus. That’s really what it boils down to. ~ Lisa

Prayer for the Week
Jesus, we love You. Thank You that You came to serve. Thank You that You modeled washing feet instead of posturing and posing. Thank You that You’re humble and want us to be humble. Help us when we get puffed up and forget that it’s all about You. We love You, Lord. Amen.
