For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose. — Philippians 2:13
God is always at work in our lives. Even when we can’t see Him, He’s behind the scenes working in ways we may never know.
But sometimes, we get to see His fingerprints in our life’s story first hand, and it marks us forever. From that day forward we walk with a new found strength, armed with a testimony of God’s goodness, His faithfulness, and His sovereign hand to write our story into History.
John Piper once said, “God is always doing 10,000 things in your life. And you may be aware of three of them.” That quote captures perfectly what we’ve found to be true in our own lives. Maybe you have as well. The fact is we all have difficult and trying times when things seem to be going wrong and we can’t catch a break. It’s just the way of life on this side of eternity. And yet sometimes we question God, or wonder if He really even cares at all.
Well, He does. We know this because we’ve been there before. And we’ve watched Him work in ways we never imagined possible. Many of you know us from the time we got fired by HGTV, which was a tough time for us. Although we thought a new show with a major network was our chance to do something great for God — something that could impact our culture for good — when the rubber met the road and we refused to compromise our principles we got the old heave-ho and lost the show.
We found ourselves wondering what just happened. During that difficult time we drew strength from stories in our own lives when God proved faithful even when everything seemed to be revealing otherwise.
Our latest book, Miracle In Shreveport, is one of those stories. It’s the one story that brought us more encouragement than all the others.
Getting thrust into an embroiled media controversy was not exactly what we had in mind for our lives. But God was working behind the scenes, and we could trust Him — because we had seen Him work on our behalf before. We drew strength from an earlier time in our lives where God literally stepped in, peeled back the curtain, and showed us His divine hand working in a way that blew our minds.
Sometimes it’s even hard for us to believe what God actually did in us and for us during that time — but it’s true. We saw Him work in such a powerful way as young Little League baseball players with a dream of making it to the Pro’s one day that regardless of what happened with HGTV, or anything else, we would not be shaken. Because we had a testimony of God’s incredible faithfulness — we had seen Him work before. And we knew He was going to fulfill His purposes.
And that’s just it, God is the One “who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” He’s faithfully writing your story into History, and you can trust Him.
