Your Mornings Matter

Your Mornings Matter

Your Mornings Matter

My morning routine has been a retreat; a filling station; an energizing, envisioning, wonderfully infectious habit that has brought peace, calm, and order to so many other areas of my life.

It started small, messy, and (honestly) lazy. Sometimes I would fall asleep during my morning routine. Sometimes I still do. It isn’t always perfect, but it is… always.

I’ve learned to wake up for my life instead of just to my life. It has become a habit. It’s my default. When things get out of control and crazy, my morning time with God is what I always come back to. My morning routine feels as if I’m crawling into the lap of my heavenly Father and He’s wrapping His arms around me, and all seems right with the world. It’s where He reminds me who I am, whose I am, and what I’m called to do. Then we make a plan to get it done. I’m filled up to give.

I can face my day, not in my own power and organization, but in His.

Your morning routine can be your daily reset button. As Anne of Green Gables said, “Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?”1

Taking the time to sit and savor all the possibility wrapped up in the next twenty-four hours is refreshing, inspiring, and invigorating. The One who, with a simple whisper to your heart, can make all right with the world, waits ever so patiently for you each morning. He knows you. He wants you. He remembers your biggest dreams, your secret hopes, and your desperate prayers. He paid a great price to meet you in your darkest hour, to give you the greatest gift.

He is my greatest gift, the source of my hope and security. With Him, every single day, all things are possible.

God Holds Our Possibilities

Think about it. If I believe God created me with a specific purpose and plan for my life, then He must have a purpose and plan for my year. If He has a purpose and plan for my year, He has a purpose and plan for my days. That means He has a purpose and plan for today. And if my all-knowing, all-powerful, loving God has a plan for my day, why wouldn’t I want to be a part of it?

He created me and understands my deepest needs. He knows the most powerful ways I can be used to bring glory to Him and bring hope and healing to others. He knows exactly how I can have the greatest impact with my life, with every single day.

How could checking e-mail, Facebook, or Instagram compare with checking in with the God of the universe who has an agenda for my day that is a perfect fit for me?

Every morning we have the choice to trudge through the day without vision or direction, feeling purposeless and overwhelmed. Or we can connect with God, glimpse His directions for our lives, understand who we can influence, and discern how we can grow and ways we can bring Him glory today.

When we think about it that way, why would we want to start our mornings any other way?

Every Day Is a Big Day

We wake up early when we have a big day. Maybe it’s the first day of school or a holiday. Maybe we’re catching a vacation flight, or we’re eager for Christmas morning. Maybe it’s our first day of work or our wedding day.

Whatever the occasion, we wake up early when something important is happening. What if every day felt important? What if every day felt as if it was bursting with meaning and hope?

It is, it should, and it can.

As long as we are alive, we have room to grow. There is always hope, possibility, and another peak to climb.
