Books About Recovery from Addiction
There’s nothing new about addiction. It doesn’t even matter what the substance is. We Christians are both saints (Romans 1:7, Colossians 1:2) and sinners saved by grace (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Addiction is like being caught in a rip tide carrying you further and further out to sea. If you had the power to get out of it by yourself, you would, but it’s stronger than you are. It doesn’t start out that way, but doesn’t all sin end up that way? We get caught up and in big trouble before we even know it! We don’t want to be hooked, and for some reason keep falling for the lie that we won’t get hooked, but it happens and we can’t get free.
Brothers and sisters, the Apostle Paul gave us great words for this in Romans 7:19.
For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do — this I keep on doing.
Meditate on this in the Message translation. I can picture Brother Paul pacing around the room irritated and gesturing with his hands flying around:
But I need something more! For if I know the law but still can’t keep it, and if the power of sin within me keeps sabotaging my best intentions, I obviously need help! I realize that I don’t have what it takes. I can will it, but I can’t do it. I decide to do good, but I don’t really do it; I decide not to do bad, but then I do it anyway. My decisions, such as they are, don’t result in actions. Something has gone wrong deep within me and gets the better of me every time. — Romans 7:17-20 MSG
Listen, God loves us no matter what shape we’re in. He wants us to break the shackles and live life abundantly (John 10:10). No guilt, no shame, just freedom in Jesus Christ!
