How do you know what will happen even tomorrow? What, after all, is your life? It is like a puff of smoke visible for a little while and then dissolving into thin air. — James 4:14
The Barrier Islands, Mississippi
One of the most unique places in the state of Mississippi lies just beyond its beautiful coastline. Stretching nearly eighty miles across the state’s Gulf of Mexico shore, a chain of five narrow, elongated islands offer an unusual landscape and a peaceful refuge for those who make the effort to explore them. The islands — Petite Boise, Horn, East and West Ship, and Cat — are part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore Park. Each island has its own unique history, features, and possibilities for relaxation and adventure. All five islands are accessible by private boat and chartered cruises, but only Ship Island offers regular passenger ferry service. Visitors on day trips can choose from a range of activities, including hiking, bird-watching, fishing, kayaking, and snorkeling. Boaters and kayakers, however, are wise to keep an eye on weather conditions, because the islands are always vulnerable to storms blowing in from the gulf. Hurricanes have actually submerged parts of the islands beneath the sea, changing their shapes and shorelines.
Visitors might find these islands to be scenic hidden jewels, but in stormy times no one should place confidence in them as a refuge.
Confidence is a positive quality for every Christian — as long as that confidence rests in God Himself.
The very best confidence we can have is rooted in the character, wisdom, andpower of the Creator. Human abilities falter. Health can change in a heartbeat.Finances can blow away like leaves in the wind. Trusted relationships can fail orbe swept away by death. Even loved and respected Christian leaders can stumble. But when we anchor our confidence in the eternal God, we can rest withfull assurance. The apostle Paul reminds us that in all the great and unpredictablestorms of life,
we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. — Romans 8:37
Father, I need reminding that what seems so solid in my life right now is really only shifting sand. Thank You, God, for a firm place to stand in such an uncertain world.
Self-confidence will never be enough when your world turns upside down.
