Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. —Psalm 23:4 (NIV)
Have you ever found yourself waiting on God, and he doesn’t seem to be answering? I’m sure you have. We all have. And it never seems to get easier.
I was in a season when I prayed, read my Bible, and did all I could to listen for God’s voice. But all I heard was silence. All I knew to do was to keep pressing on and doing the next thing. I did my best to move forward and trust moment by moment that God was at work although I couldn’t yet see.
Suddenly, the fog lifted. Not only had the pieces of the puzzle begun to fall into place, but I could also see several steps behind me where God had orchestrated even the smallest details to lead me to just the right place. Though I couldn’t yet see, God had been moving mountains for weeks to bring all the needed elements together for a positive outcome.
In that moment, I was once again overwhelmed and humbled by the love and goodness of a God who loves us, mess makers that we are, so much that he concerns himself with everything—even the smallest detail—that concerns us.
It’s so hard to keep moving and to trust what we can’t see, especially when it looks like we’re headed straight for disaster. But our Father is always there, whether we feel his presence or not.
It’s comparable to a safety demonstration on a plane, when the flight attendant refers to the oxygen bags that will drop from the ceiling in the event of a loss of cabin pressure: “Though oxygen is flowing, the bags may not inflate.”
Though we can’t always see his hand moving, we can trust that God knows and sees every aspect of our lives, and he never stops working on our behalf. While our circumstances change, God’s attention and presence never do.
Lord, though I may not see your hand at work, I trust that you are there to bring about what is best for my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
