Celebrating the Beauty of Creation with Our Kids

Celebrating the Beauty of Creation with Our Kids

The changing seasons are a glorious display of a creative God.

But it is interesting to me how quickly we can forget the beauty that surrounds us. Not long ago, a friend was visiting from out of town. Not being from the Midwest, she couldn’t believe the beauty of the town I live in. “It’s so green. It feels like a forest,” I remember her saying as we drove along one of my favorite roads. It has also become such a familiar road that sometimes I forget how beautiful it really is. What had become commonplace to me was extraordinary to her.

Years ago, Rich Mullins wrote in one of his songs, “There is so much beauty around us for just two eyes to see.” How true! But for my two eyes to see it, they need to be open and alert. Paying attention. How easy it is to stop seeing what is all around us – the beautiful and powerful creativity of our God! We need the reminder and so do our kids.

Teaching children to see the beauty all around them begins with us as parents.

If we don’t take time to experience creation and recognize the creativity of God, they won’t either. Here are a few simple ways we can help our child understand and see our great and creative God.

  1. Talk about Creation

When we’re out driving, hiking, kayaking, or just at the park, point out God’s beauty. Help them to see the work of the God who made them. Helping our children understand God means we need to be intentional in our conversations about God and His creativity. Take time to slow down and notice who God is and His fingerprints that are all around us.

  2. Care for Creation

God is the Giver of all good things. We were made to enjoy and take care of God’s good creation. We are to be good stewards of the beauty around us. Teaching our kids to care for creation whether it be the Earth, our bodies or animals, is a good way to help them understand the value we place on God’s creation.

  3. Praise God for His Creation

I love Psalm 19. The psalmist says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” Ultimately our appreciation of the beauty of creation should point us to the beauty of our God. Helping our kids see the beauty around us enables us to help our kids praise and worship how amazing God really is.

There is “so much beauty around us” for our eyes and our kids’ eyes to see. As the seasons change, let’s take notice. Slow down. Let’s enjoy what is in front of each of us. Let’s help our eyes not only see the creation, but our great God who is the Author of creation. Talk about it. Care for it. And worship God because of it!
