Dictionary of Biblical Imagery
Every Bible reader has faced the power that understanding an image or symbol has on us. On the contrary, sometimes they are perplexed with images or symbols in the Bible that they do not understand, and they get bewildered. Those images in particular, with their hidden strength have hit and engraved themselves in the language and grammar of Christian faith and Western culture. Images and symbols that tell much more than the meaning of their grammar or words. For example:
Matthew 19.24
New King James Version (NKJ) 24
«And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God»
The meaning of this image or symbol reveals to us much more than what grammar says. It is even internalized in our Christian and Western culture. It is an image and symbol with a broad meaning.
Why then, traditional Bible dictionaries and reference books offer so little help to the explorers of the galaxy of verbal pictures in the Bible? They stand out when they describe many concepts and words. But they are often blind to the artistic expressions and deaf to the musical meanings that echo in the world of Bible text. And we miss a huge wealth because we do not know how to interpret their depth!
The «Diccionario enciclopédico de imágenes y símbolos de la Biblia» Dictionary of Images and Symbols of the Bible is the first contemporary reference book devoted to exploring the images, symbols, motifs, metaphors, and literary models of the Bible.
