How did people live when dinosaurs were around?
How did the stars get in the sky?
How does gravity really work?
If you’ve heard these questions, or similar ones, from your child, then you are not alone. Curiosity is part of human nature and each of us, young or old, longs to know more and understand more. The word “science” means “a branch of knowledge.” If the Bible is your knowledge base and authority for life, then as a parent, teaching your child the connection between God and science is easier than you may think! Check out this Bible verse that further explains the connection between God and science:
There are things about God that people cannot see — His eternal power and all the things that make Him God. But since the beginning of the world those things have been easy to understand. They are made clear by what God has made. So people have no excuse for the bad things they do. — Romans 1:20 ICB
I like to talk about this verse with kids and ask them what are some things they can’t see, but they know exist – for instance, air. We know air exists because we are breathing it into our lungs. We can see the results of air when the wind blows or if we look up at the hydrogen particles in the sky that create a beautiful shade of blue. Those are just three ways that we know air exists. We can’t see air, but we can see the effects and results of air.
Just because our limited human eyes can’t see something doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
Our God is so great that we must look beyond what our eyes can physically see and look at the effects of His work in the world.
God’s Word explains in Romans 1:20 that the things we long to know through the study of science can be understood through what He has made. When my kiddos begin to ask questions about scientific facts, I enjoy directing them to Bible passages that explain the methods and systems of God. He is not haphazard, but is purposeful in all His work. Take a look at a few more verses that helps us understand the connection between God and science!
All things were made through him. Nothing was made without him. — John 1:3 ICB
But ask the animals, and they will teach you. Or ask the birds of the air, and they will tell you. Speak to the earth, and it will teach you. Or let the fish of the sea tell you. Every one of these knows that the hand of the Lord has done this. The life of every creature and the breath of all people are in God’s hand. — Job 12:7-10 ICB
The heavens tell the glory of God. And the skies announce what His hands have made. — Psalm 19:1
Do you see it? Remember the list of questions at the beginning of this article? God’s Word provides the answers to those questions we so often hear from our children. Our wonderful, incredible God spoke the stars into space and has held them in place since the world began. He created the animals and directs our attention to the smallest details of how He created animals with specific abilities. We can look at animals in the zoo, pets in our homes, or ducks at the park pond to observe the connection between God and science.
